Vancouver, September 2003— Designated as the International Day of Older Persons by the United Nations General Assembly in 1990, October 1 is a day to commemorate seniors and give recognition to their contribution to development. The International Day for Older Persons also marks the birth of the Centre for Aging and Health at St. Vincent's Hospital, Heather.
The drive that led to the development of the Centre originated from a conference held in 1999, the International Year of the Older Person. Stakeholders from universities, health organizations and advocacy groups gathered together at this conference and confirmed the need for a centre. "This year we are particularly excited as we are making significant progress in all three areas of our mandate: research, health policy and improving health outcomes for elders," says Taj Bhaloo, Leader, Centre for Aging and Health. "The fact that the Centre has grown exponentially in a short period of time is a testament not only to its well deserved reputation of using creative means to achieve our mandate, but also demonstrates the important role the Centre plays in supporting Providence Health Care," remarks Taj. "I like to think of us as a small department with huge potential."
The International Day of Older Persons is celebrated with programs that raise awareness about the challenges facing seniors today and highlight important global aging events. Different activities will be held across PHC, including a quiz held in part with Elder Care and prizes generously donated by St. Vincent's Hospital Foundation.
